課程概述

Evolutionary biology is a comprehensive and interdisciplinary subject in biological sciences. It provides the insights and meaning for the phenomenon of the living world surrounding us. This course is designed to introduce the general concepts in evolutionary biology, including theories, models, and experimental evidences. Students are highly recommended to take genetics or equivalent subjects before taking this course. Students are required to participate the discussion sessions, and some of the materials require extra works after the class. Several homework assignments will be distributed during the semester.

課程目標
The aims of this courses are to let students understand the concepts and theories of evolutionary biology.
課程要求
1. Prerequisite of the course: Biology, and Genetics or equivalent.
2. Grading of debates/discussion is based on the performance in the class or the reports if they are not the presenters, and there will be punishment off points if homeworks/reports are submitted after the deadline.
3. The students will be divided into 8 groups, and no more than 4 persons per group. You will need to hand in the group member names on the second week (9/20, after the class). For debates, two groups will present the two sides of the topics given by the lecturers. Others will be the listeners and expected to get involved in the debates too. More details will be provided at class.
4. For discussions, two concurrent sessions will be held before the lecture started, i.e. 9:10-10:00, at two different classrooms (Rm 4A and 4C). The discussion will be led by one of the groups, so that each group will need to lead two discussions for the semester. Every student is expected to read the selected paper before the discussion session. The paper for discussion and other details will be announced later.
5. No make-up exams will be given without prior arrangements and an official excuse from a physician or an administrator. A missed exam will result in a zero grade for that exam. You should call or email the instructors before the start of the exam. A make-up exam, if granted, may contain different questions and in a format of the instructor's choosing (including possible essay questions or an oral exam).
6. In this course you are expected to attend every class, be on time to class, and expect to stay the whole class period. Be respectful of class - no distracting behavior or devices. No laptop activity other than note-taking, and no texting during class. A poor class attendance is usually correlated with poor average grades (Ds and Fs) at the end. In case of absence, you are responsible for contacting a class member for missed notes, syllabus changes, announcements or other materials. In other words, you are still responsible for what happens in lecture even if you are not present.
7. Listen carefully and take notes in class. A great resource for effective listening and note-taking is available on the Dartmouth's Academic Skill Center's website:
http://www.dartmouth.edu/%7Eacskills/success/notes.html
8. You should complete all assignments, exams, and projects on the dates and times scheduled and in the manner specified.
